This opinion piece, written by Michelle McMurry, a medical doctor, argues that states should not mandate the HPV vaccine until we have enough time to know that it is truly safe.
I disagree with her ultimate conclusion that it should be mandated after we know the vaccine is safe. There's no reason for a mandate for such a vaccine. Nevertheless, I note yet another M.D.'s opinion: It's just too soon for a mandate for Gardasil.
Noteworthy content:Is the new vaccine safe? I'm afraid the answer is ... we just don't know yet.
And this:We often discover new complications and risks only after a drug or vaccine is released "into the wild." The upshot: Mandating a new drug or vaccine may be worth the risk when it prevents a contagious, fatal childhood disease such as polio. But cervical cancer is a preventable - through Pap smears - often treatable and sometimes survivable adult illness.

So intead of experimenting on only young girls this doctor suggests that we should just do it on girls who have reached the age for sexual activity? Hmm. I would guess that is most every girl eventually. Will Dr Michelle step up to the plate and get the vaccine? Her logic is faulty.
She also goes on to say that the FDA does an excellent job of determining the safety of drugs before they come on to the market. I would argue that comment. Has she forgotten Vioxx (a Merck debacle), propulsid, phenylpropanolamine, Baycol, and a lot more? And now what is going on with the Rota Tech vaccine? (another Merck wonder drug still on the market) If the FDA is so good how did this all happen? Seems these drugs made it onto the market then had to be taken off due to serious damage.
Merck is a dangerous company. They have already demonstrated to the public that they will lie, falsify information and promote products that are not safe. Why don't we request that they experiment on their own daughters and wives if they should want to volunteer instead of yours and mine? And then after 20 years if all is well, then we can look again at bringing this vaccine to the public.
Please remember that all states do not mandate vaccinations but they are instructed in those states to ACT like they do. In Utah students are told that vaccines are mandatory for school but they are not. All it takes is a visit to the local Department of Health to get a waiver signed by the parent or guardian. We easily did this but then after going through elementary schools with a waiver they tried to pull it again on my son when he entered the University. State Universities are subject to the same laws in this regard as elementary schools. We had to get nasty with them before they backed off but back off they did.
